BAIRD, Alexander, Royal Navy surgeon. Letter of attorney of Alexander Baird, Surgeon, Royal Navy, appointing Messrs Francis Wilson & William McInerkeny to handle on his behalf any prize money or other monies that may be owed him by the Royal Navy while on active service. Folio (c 8 x 13 ins), printed on parchment with manuscript insertions signed by Alexander Baird, dated 22nd March 1814, with tax stamp and seal, and docketed in manuscript “Minuted at the Transport Office the 31 of January 1816. John Bynon”. With folds, one with a small loss to the right hand document edge.

These forms providing power of attorney were often used by Royal Navy officers and men during the Napoleonic War when they expected to be on active service for protracted periods. Alexander Baird may be the same person whose marriage to Anne Fishwick is recorded on 30 July 1822 in the registers of St George, Everton, Lancashire, where he is recorded as a surgeon of Prescot [Lancashire].
