WATSON, Solomon (1811-1900) & Mary (1816-1910). Two 19th century portrait miniatures on card, both mounted in a papier-mâché frames (4 x 5 inches) with brass suspenders. The first is of a young gentleman, identified by an inscription on the reverse under a window cut-out as ‘Solomon Watson b.1st Jany. 1811 d.15th Jany. 1900’. The second is of a young lady, identified on the reverse on a label as ‘Miss Mary Watson b.1816 sister of Solomon Watson of Summerville died 2nd January 1910’. The card of both bowed under the mounts.
The Watsons were Quakers of Clonmel, county Tipperary, Ireland, whose main family residence was Summerville House, and whose members chiefly worked as merchants and bankers. Solomon Watson and Mary Watson were two of nine children of William Watson (1779-1837) and Elizabeth Newenham (c.1780-1849). Solomon married Ellinor Sargent in 1841 by whom he had a daughter, but Mary Watson does not appear to have married.
