SURTEES, COOKSON, DOVETON & ADAMS, families. Three small oval portraits of ladies painted in watercolour, in matching frames and mounts, with the sitters’ identities as follows:

1. Small three-quarter-length portrait in watercolour of a lady in a fine dress (c.1820s), mounted under a gold oval window mount in an oval ebonised gilt frame (213 x 240mm). The identification of the sitter is painted in faded gold within the foot of the frame “ELIZABETH COOKSON. WIFE OF ROBERT SURTEES OF REDWORTH 1811”

2. Small three-quarter-length portrait in watercolour of a lady in a fine dress (c.1830s), mounted under a gold oval window mount in an oval ebonised gilt frame (213 x 240mm).  The identification of the sitter is painted in faded gold within the foot of the frame “MARIA DOVETON. B.1814 – D.1910. WIFE OF FRANCIS ADAMS OF CLIFTON.”

3. Small three-quarter-length portrait in watercolour of a lady in a fine dress (c.1870), mounted under a gold oval window mount in an oval ebonised gilt frame (230 x 260mm). The identification of the sitter is painted in faded gold within the foot of the frame “ISABEL ADAMS 1849-1916 WIFE OF H. E. SURTEES”

The eldest member of this family line, Elizabeth Cookson (1783-1847), subject of portrait1, was the daughter of Isaac Cookson (1745-1831) of Whitehill, Co.Durham. She married in 1811 Robert Surtees (1781-1857) of Redworth Hall, Durham, by whom she had four children, including Henry Edward Surtees (1819-1895) M.P., D.L., J.P , who served in 10th Hussars. Henry’s second marriage (1870) was to Isabel Adams (1849-1916), subject of portrait 2, a daughter of Francis Adams (1812-1885) and Maria Doveton (1814-1910). Maria, subject of portrait 3, married Francis Adams of Clifton in 1835, and was the daughter of the Rev. John Frederick Doveton (1774-1857) rector of Burnett and of Mells, Somerset.

Portrait 1 of Elizabeth Cookson (Mrs Elizabeth Surtees) is interestingly an exact copy of the three-quarter-length portrait in oils painted by the French painter, sculptor, engraver, and lithographer Charles Louis Bazin (1802-1859).  The oil portraits of both Mrs Elizabeth Surtees and her son Henry Edward Surtees were sold at auction in 2000 (see Lot 47, Christies Sale 8932, British and Victorian Pictures 9 November 2000 London, South Kensington).
