I'ANSON, Susannah (1756-1822). Gold mourning ring with a seed pearl bezel surrounding an oval pale lilac crystal, the bezel held on attractive sculpted shoulders, the band hallmarked London 1782 with makers initials JWK, and the underside of the bezel inscribed “Mrs Susannah I’Anson, Ob. 8 Dec. 1822 Aet 66”. The internal diameter is 19mm.
The inscription dating to 1822 indicates that this mourning ring has been re-used on a mourning ring made in 1782, a practice occasionally found with family heirloom mourning jewellery. The I’Anson family is mainly found in Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumberland, though Susannah I’Anson 1756-1822 commemorated here has not been traced on initial searches.
